Are YOU stuck in PROCRASTINATION?

Are YOU stuck in PROCRASTINATION?

Are you a “GONNA DO” person?  Do you tell yourself, “Next week I’m gonna do…” “One day I’m gonna do…” “Someday I’m gonna do…” spending more time THINKING about doing than actually DOING?

If your answer is YES, then chances are, you and Mr Procrastination are buddies!

We are all acquainted with PROCRASTINATION.  You have something you really need to do, but you hold off, occupying your time with everything else, except that one very thing – the one very thing that counts.

It could be studying for an exam, starting that healthy eating plan, completing an assignment, asking someone on a date, or even asking your boss for a raise, or so forth.

Something interesting happens when you procrastinate or resist completing a task. Your mind starts to play TRICKS on you telling you that TASK is HARDER than it is. Your little fear actually grows into a BIG FAT monster.

For example, the longer you hold off from asking that person on a date, the scarier it becomes. The longer you hold off from completing an assignment, the more painful it seems. By holding back you make the task harder for yourself.

If you feel nervous, or have a fear, see it as a GOOD THING…  It means you are challenging yourself to grow.

“The more important a project is to your soul’s evolution, the more you’ll resist it.” – Steven Pressfield

I succumbed to procrastination last week completing the final illustrations for my book.  I waited a week to get back to drawing and by the time I picked up my pencil I was convinced in terror that I couldn’t draw.

HOW DID I OVERCOME PROCRASTINATION?

Just as there are exercises to tone muscles and remedies to heal illnesses, there is one cure for procrastination: That is ACTION.

Not only ACTION,  but action NOW, not tomorrow, next week, or next year.

The only way I could sleigh my monster was for me to pick up my pencil and start drawing the freaking images. My illustrations weren’t perfect, but for my purposes, they were good enough. After I took ACTION, my fears melted away.

“Most of us go through life as failures because we are waiting for the ‘time to be right’ to start doing something worthwhile. Do not wait. The time will NEVER be ‘just right.’ Start where you stand, work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.” – Napoleon Hill, ‘Think and Grow Rich’

Don’t be a perfectionist because the conditions will never be perfect. Deal with obstacles along the way – you don’t have to have the entire plan mapped out.

You can kick your excuses aside that you are too young, too old, not intelligent enough, or beautiful enough.  Lyn Ruth Miller took action on her dream to become a comedian at age 70.

If you keep holding off until sometime in the future, you may reach the end of your life still thinking about it, missing out on your dreams.

“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.” – Pablo Picasso

I also discovered you don’t have to wait to be ‘inspired’ or until you have some heavenly epiphany before taking action.  As an artist, I know that inspiration helps, but it doesn’t happen 100% of the time. Sometimes you just have to pick up a paintbrush or start writing for ideas to flow.

“Don’t wait for the spirit to move you. Take action, dig in, and you move the spirit.” David J. Schwartz, ‘The Magic of Thinking Big’

“Those who reach decisions promptly and definitely know what they want, generally get it.” – Napoleon Hill

Here are my favourite tips to overcome procrastination:

  1. Don’t be a perfectionist.
  2. Take action even if you aren’t inspired, the inspiration will come.
  3. Kick the habit of indecision and start making decisions promptly.
  4. Focus on the goal and what you will achieve, rather than the process.
  5. As Denise Duffield Thomas, CEO of Lucky Bitch says – Stop making excuses and just get your sh*t done!
  6. Finally my favourite bit of advice came from Sandy Forster, my Inspired Spirit Coaching Academy trainer and CEO of www.wildlywealthy.com, taught me three simple steps to take every day. You can apply this:

ASK YOURSELF:

  1. What is the ONE thing you don’t want to do today, but if you did, would move you forward in life?
  2. How would you benefit from doing it?
  3. DO IT NOW.

If you do this for 30 days your life will blossom.
